We want everyone to be able to dance, so we encourage dancers without a permanent partner to sign up with their partner "TBA" (to be announced). Before and at the competition, you will have opportunities to find someone to dance with. Please see below for details on how TBAs will be handled at the C
Prior to the competition, you can check the TBA Matching page on Ballroom Comp Express to see if there are other dancers looking for a partner.
At the competition, we will be holding TBA signups in the practice room the evening before all the syllabus events. For Standard and Rhythm, this will be on Friday at 9:00 PM. For Smooth and Latin, it will be on Saturday at 9:00 PM.
For Amateur events, both dancers in a partnership must be eligible to dance in the level for which the couple is signed up. This means that "out of level" TBAs, such as when a leader dancing in a Gold event dances in a Bronze event with a TBA follower, are not allowed.
However, in Rookie/Vet events, the opposite is true. In these events, the leader and follower are expected to be different levels, and only the partner who is being judged needs to match the level of the event.
There are two exceptions to this rule. First, competitors may dance in one level below their lowest level if dancing in their opposite role (for example, a follower dancing Silver and Gold in a style can lead a TBA partner in Bronze in that style). Second, Master of Syllabus events have no level restrictions, so partners can be of any level for these events.
It depends. To compete in Amateur events, you need to have paid the appropriate registration fees. However, if you are dancing as the Vet in a Rookie/Vet couple, you do not need to pay.
All competitors, regardless of what events they participate in, must be current members of USA Dance.
Since you can't know who will be at the competition beforehand, we encourage you to sign up for all the events in the Amateur and Rookie/Vet categories in the levels and styles you want to dance, along with the Master of Syllabus event in that style. This will maximize your chances of finding a partner for your events.
While we will do everything we can to help you find a partner, we cannot guarantee that you'll be able to dance in all of your events. Unfortunately, there may be times when there aren't enough partners signed up for every event.
In Rookie/Vet events, a less experienced dancer (the "Rookie") dances with a more experienced dancer (the "Vet"). The level of the event is set by the Rookie's level, and only the Rookies are judged.
